Papers, ca. 1820-1890.

Box 1 comprises 236 items of correspondence and papers; box 2 comprises 43 photographs dated 1863. The correspondence primarily consists of letters between Howell and family members in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with some items from army correspondents, including Quincy Adams Gillmore, William F. Johnston, Wilson McCandless, John J. Peck, Truman Seymour, and Alfred Howell Terry. Also included are letters dealing with the aftermath of Howell's death, including eulogies, dedications, and pension information. The papers in the collection relate to the life, career, and demise of Howell. For his pre-war life there are school materials and his mother's obituary, and for his years in the militia and army there are newspaper clippings and army field orders and bulletins from 1862 to 1863. Posthumous papers include materials relating to his death and those belonging to his second wife, Katharine Whiteley Howell (1842-1866), as well as a biographical sketch. The album of photographs comprises prints made by Haas and Peale of Morris Island and Hilton Head, South Carolina. The images depict encampments, fortifications, and especially various artillery being used by the Union forces.
